With average daily temperatures between 70 and 80 degrees, Angel Fire in Northern New Mexico offers exciting mountain adventures without the heat. In fact, visitors have been coming to northern New Mexico for centuries for just that reason. From the beautiful spring-fed lakes, majestic surroundings and wildlife sightings. Summer is a wonderful time to visit.

TREK DOWN THE MOUNTAINSIDE AT ANGEL FIRE BIKE PARK

Over 35 miles of expertly laid singletrack and trails featuring ramps, manicured berms and jump lines, await you at Angel Fire Bike Park. Named one of the premier bike parks in the southwest, you’ll ride the chairlift up to 10,000 ft.

There are trails for beginners to experts. Natural trails, which aren’t groomed are best for the novice while free-ride trails are full of drops and beams, better for experienced riders.

Two popular trails that are fun for all levels are the Jazz Hands and Diesel Trails which will send you on a fast rush among the trees. Bike rentals and helmets are available throughout Angel Fire. The chairlift and bike trails are open 7 days a week starting in May.

GOLFING WITH A MOUNTAIN VIEW

Talk about a birds-eye-view! The Angel Fire Country Club offers some of the most magnificent mountain views in the southwest. This Angel Fire golf course is a par 72, 18-hole course that will take you to fabulous heights surrounded by groves of spruce pines and golden aspens. Take advantage of sweeping mountain views on all sides while you level up your golf swing.

Tee-off at Angel Fire golf course at 8,600 feet. Built in 1972 as a summer playground comparable to the ski resort, 6,653 yards were methodically planned as a golfers’ delight. The course is a mix of challenging and easy holes. There’s a fun par 3 that is a lot of golfer’s favorite. The 6th hole has you climb 200 additional feet to tee off of a box, making it a truly unique golf experience.

Expect to find fast perfect greens and lush fairways. The front nine has a tight tree line and requires straight swings. In comparison, the back nine turns to mountain meadow play with rolling fairways, roaming streams and lots of bunkers. Sightings of deer, elk, small mammals, geese and ducks are plentiful as they are often roaming the course.

The practice areas are significantly stocked with balls. There are separate chipping, putting and range areas. The world-class pro shop will take care of all of your golfing needs. PGA Certified Golf Instructors can be booked separately or through a group clinic.

If you’re traveling with kids you’ll want to take advantage of the other things that the Angel Fire Country Club has to offer. There is an indoor pool, kid clinics or golf clinics and meals catered to them.

Choose from two dining experiences indoors or on an outdoor patio. Par & Grill serves breakfast and pub-style lunches in the bar or outside. The patio is the perfect place to grab a drink and watch the sunset over the mountains. Elements restaurant is open in the evenings and provides fine dining in casual settings. They specialized in fresh locally sourced food, premium steak and seafood.

Come for the golfing but stay for some of the most spectacular views. Angel Fire is an exceptional place for golfers looking for a mountain golf excursion in Northern New Mexico.

ENJOY LAKE ACTIVITIES IN ANGEL FIRE

It doesn’t feel like summer unless you’re at the lake. In the heart of Angel Fire lies a beautiful 28-acre spring-fed lake. Monte Verde Lake has become a hot spot for fishing and recreational activities.

FISH FOR TROUT & SALMON

Calming and relaxing, fishing from the shores of the lake in Angel Fire is something anyone can do. Stocked with rainbow trout regularly, you have a fair chance of getting a catch. Rods and bait are available for rent and purchase.

AQUATIC ACTIVITIES & RENTALS IN ANGEL FIRE

Explore the crystal-clear waters in this no-wake lake in the heart of Moreno Valley offers breathtaking views of surrounding sun-lit mountains. Kids love the self-propelled pedal boats. For $35 you can rent pedal boards for kids as young as 4 years old. They must be able to swim and, of course, wear a life jacket (provided).

You can navigate the glistening shores on a kayak. Rentals for 1 and 2 people are available for those 12 years of age and up. Or, to get more adventurous, test your balance on a stand-up paddleboard. There is no swimming at the lake so if you do fall off, you’ll be asked to get right back on your board.

Canoes and fishing boats are also available to rent. You can fish from these if you’re desiring a top fishing spot in the center depths of the lake. The Country Club does have an indoor heated swimming pool, available to the public for a fee if swimming is something you want to do on your mountain vacation.

HIKE THE TRAIL

This easy 1-mile trail around the lake is a beautiful and peaceful way to explore the lake area. This trail is on relatively flat terrain and will take you through scenic meadows featuring vividly colored wildflowers. You’ll get close to the shore at times and may sight beaver, geese and other aquatic mountain animals. This trail is great for families with small children. It can be navigated on foot, stroller, horseback or mountain bike.

ENJOY A PICNIC BY THE LAKE

There is plenty of shade, benches and picnic tables around the shores of the lake. With exquisite views of Angel Fire and the surrounding Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the natural beauty will take your breath away. Here families, friends and couples come together to enjoy a picnic or simply marvel at the scenery.

WILDLIFE SIGHTING & PHOTOGRAPHY

The Moreno Valley and Angel Fire are truly special places for wildlife enthusiasts. The region is home to a diverse range of animals, from large game such as mule deer, elk, and bear, to smaller creatures such as chipmunks, squirrels, rabbits, and raccoons. And if you’re lucky, you might even spot a mountain lion or bobcat.

One of the best ways to observe wildlife in the region is through hiking. These activities allow you to experience the beauty of the area while respecting the animals and their natural habitat. 

Visitors can have a memorable and rewarding experience observing these amazing creatures. If you’re into birdwatching, reach out to the AngelFire Wetland Conservation Committee for events, more information on bird species and more. 

Additionally, it’s important to follow all rules and regulations for wildlife viewing and photography, and to never feed or approach wild animals. Many of these animals are wild and can be dangerous if they feel threatened or cornered.

ENJOY THE MOUNTAINSIDE BY A HORSEBACK RIDING TOUR

One of the most popular horse riding tours, the Half Day Gold Panning Tour, will take you along crystal streams in the nearby Carson National Forest. Start at Road Runner Tours in the morning and meander along rocky trails and over flower-filled meadows. Stop at various low-tide places where you’ll be given the equipment and learn how to pan. 

A bag lunch will be provided. After you find your gold, you’ll head back on the second part of an easy half-day tour.

For more time in the saddle and a fantastic cowboy-style dinner, you can also book a Chuckwagon Tour. You’ll spend three hours exploring the magnificent wilderness of Carson National Forest. When you return back to camp, a real old-fashioned chuckwagon will be prepared for a true southwest cowboy adventure and meal.

PLAY A GAME OF HIGH-ALTITUDE DISC GOLF

Combine a ride up the summit with spending an afternoon playing disc golf. The 18-hole course has both amateur and pro-level tee pads. The high altitude takes this game to another level. Follow the path down shady mountain slopes. Be on the lookout for bald eagles and deer while you play. Disc golf in Angel Fire is FREE. You will need to purchase a lift ticket. Rentals are available at the Ticket Office at the base of the Chile Express chairlift.
